Carey, S. (2009): The origin of concepts

On icons

One interesting thing about Carey’s account is that she works almost entirely with the notion of an icon as a representation whose parts also represent the object of the whole. So she thinks of iconicity entirely in term of Fodor’s “picture principle”. But this doesn’t obviously capture anything about what an icon is, nor does it even get the extension right, since there might be iconic representations which lack any relevant part.
